Timeless Imprints

Discover The Purpose of Every Imprint

Every banknote has features that fall into seven broad categories. Three are symbolic, carrying national, cultural, or auspicious meaning. Another three are practical, serving purposes related to governance, security, or identification. The final category covers background elements—details that don’t fit neatly into the other groups but contribute to the overall design and context of the note.

Nationhood motifs are the designs that will be instantly recognisable to all Singaporeans. They are the emblems that define our national identity—from the national coat of arms to our national flower.

Heritage motifs depict Singapore’s Singapore’s cultural and economic roots on our banknotes. Through images such as orchids, birds, and our financial district, every note reflects a different aspect of our legacy of trade, identity, and progress.

Auspicious motifs uncover the hidden symbols of luck and prosperity embedded in our currency—from mythical creatures guarding wealth to the flowing grace of fishes and the ancient significance of cowries. I will reveal tokens that reflect a blend of tradition, superstition, and financial aspirations. You will be surprised to learn that these tokens are in the banknotes you have been touching every day!

While the above motifs are symbolic and included in our banknotes for their meanings, seals are functional and featured for practical purposes. Governance seals are meant to instil public confidence and trust in every piece of our banknote. In this section, I will explore the functions and other less-known details about the authoritative and accounting marks such as the signatures, prefixes, and serial numbers

Security seals are features concealed within our banknotes to safeguard them against forgery. These include things like watermarks and security threads that are carefully embedded into each note. The goal isn’t to completely stop counterfeiting, but to deter. While large-scale syndicates can still do it, it’s made deliberately hard enough so individuals won’t even bother to try. The logic is simple: it’s easier for the authorities to trace counterfeit notes to large-scale syndicates and bust them at one go, than to track down individuals. On this page, you may notice that some pictures are blurred or very small—that’s on purpose, because these security features are not meant to be easily seen or copied.

Recognition seals are features incorporated into our banknotes to help identify every denomination. These variations in print, colour, size, and tactile marks ensure our banknotes will be accessible and usable by all profiles of people.

Issuance profile refers to the more contextual information about the circulation and background of our banknotes, such as the issuing authorities, issue dates, printers, and artists. Only some of this information is printed on the banknotes—so don’t try looking for all of them—but I will explain all of them to complete the understanding.
