Special Editions

Apart from commemorating occasions through specially designed notes, Singapore also commemorates them by issuing special-edition notes. Special editions use the same design as an existing circulation note or a newly-design commemorative note, but spot a unique feature, such as an overprint, a unique prefix, curated numbers, or an uncut version. Special edition notes are almost always issued in very limited numbers, and are therefore rare and highly valued.

1990: 25th Anniversary, Independence of Singapore

This note uses the design of the SG25 $50 commemorative note, but includes an overprint “9 August 1990”, marking the exact date of Singapore’s 25th anniversary. The note also comes with the prefix A reserved for these special editions. 300,000 pieces were issued.

1992: 25 Years of Currency Issue & 25th Anniversary of BCCS

This note uses the design of the Ship $2 note, but includes an overprint statement: “25 Years of Currency Issue, 1967-1992, Board of Commissoners of Currency, Singapore, 12th June 1992”, along with the BCCS logo. Interestingly, the overprint came with a spelling error—a missing “i” in “Commissioners”—and some collectors therefore regard this as an error note. The prefix JB is reserved for this commemorative note, and 5,000 pieces were issued.

This set of 0YI notes is based on the Portrait series $2 to $10000 notes. To commemorate President Yusof Ishak, a special prefix 0YI was created. All denominations of each set carried the same 0YI prefix, along with an identical serial number. The government issued 100 sets of the $2-$10000 collection, 1000 sets of the $2 to $1000 collection, and 10000 sets of the $2 to $100 collection.

1999: Launch of Yusof Ishak Books

This note uses the design of the Portrait $2 note. As part of the launch of the Portrait series notes, three books were printed to commemorate President Ishak. One book was titled: “President Yusof Ishak and the Portrait Notes”. Issued with this book was a commemorative Portrait $2 note that contained the 0ZZ prefix, even though the prefix ZZ was usually used for replacement notes. Another book launched was a paperback book The Presidential Notes. This note uses the design of the Portrait $10 note, and again carries the 0ZZ prefix. It is unknown how many pieces of this pair of notes were issued.

Shortly after the issue of the Portrait $10000 specimen note, the government released a Portrait $1000 specimen note. The note is perforated with the word ‘SPECIMEN’, and like the $10000 version, also contains the prefix 8PN. It is believed that 450 pieces of this note was printed, but fewer than 100 pieces remain in circulation today. It appears a large quantity of these specimen notes were destroyed some years ago after someone tried to pass them off as genuine notes.
